Dark wood trim/Replacement windows....any suggestions? I live in an older house (1925) and I have dark wood trim throughout the house which I love but we recently had replacement windows put in. They are white/plastic? Does anyone have any suggestions as to whether I can paint/stain the white part of the windows to match the trim? Thanks!
Vinyl Replacement Windows - Upgrade over wood windows? So I have WOOD double hung windows now. They are not the greatest for usabilty since they don't tilt for cleaning and there is a storm window you have to open as well. If I replace them with a higher end white vinyl replacement window, will people looking to buy my house look at it as an upgrade? Not sure if they will they think, "oh look, cheap white vinyl windows doesn't go with the house" or "oh look, bright clean looking windows must be brand new." Putting in a combarable wood window is not even financially possible. I should have added that my home was built in 1995...so I don't know if they already think the existing windows are fine. 100% virgin vinyl won't yellow. I'm looking at upper end vinyl windows which are half the cost of a comp. wood window. You have to spend $1000-$1200 per window for wood windows. I guess if you have a half million dollar home it makes sense. I did more research on the yellowing, and that is an old scare tatic that came up 15 years ago for small start-up vinyl window companies that are no longer in business. Companies like Gorell and Soft-Lite do not have those issues....there'd be lawsuits all over the place. If you see yellow on a vinyl window its called nicotine. I should have added that my storms are wood and the windows have a poor sill design so alot of the storms have rotted or molded up. I've tried to strip them and repaint but the mold comes back due to the moisture...no weep holes!
Does anyone have Anderson Replacement composite windows topped w/wood veneer? My husband and I are interested in replacing the original 1918 windows in our Craftsman. Keeping the double-hung look is important to us. So far, we've gotten quotes on a new construction (full insert) Pella window and replacement Anderson windows. The Pella windows, imo, look better. They are also thousands of dollars more. My question, is this: do you have the Anderson wood veneer replacement windows? If so, did you paint or stain them? How long have you had them? Does the internal finish hold up and still look good? I'm concerned about the durability of this thin, wood veneer.
Has anyone used Renewal by Andersen for replacement windows? Are they much more expensive including installation than vinyl windows? We are seriously considering top of the line vinyl replacement windows from Paradigm. We've got a total of 13 windows, some standard size double hung and some small sliders. We were quoted 10k including labor. Seems like a good deal to us but we are concerned about the toxicity of vinyl in our home. So we're now thinking maybe wood windows instead, but are concerned we can't afford it. Any help would be appreciated!
How much should I expect to pay for vinyl replacement windows? I have to replace 26 windows in a 66 year old house. These are old wood windows that have NEVER been replaced. I'm looking at a double pane, double hung, Shuco windows w/ a 25 year warranty. I recently got an estimate for $14,100 total (including windows, installation, removal of old windows, taxes, etc). In addition, they will replace my front door and install it at no additional cost. I'm in the DC area and while I have gotten other quotes from other vendors, I was wondering if this particular merchant was offering me a good deal.
Can I put replacement windows in? My dad built a brick porch on the front of our house in 1961. I found that out today when I seen "61" carved into the concrete floor. Mom and dad are gone, and now I own the house. I would like to take the storm windows down and put real windows in there spot. How do I know if I can use replacement windows? There are wood frames around the windows.
White Vinyl Window Replacement - Paint Wood Casement? So I'm looking to get white vinyl window replacement (Preservation triple pane) with white grids. I currently have good trim through the house so I'm debating if I should leave the casement/trim as is wood or if I should paint it white to match the window? The vinly woodgrains look odd to me, and its not financial feaseable to be a quality wood window in. Thoughts?
What is the best replacement window material? I just bought a home built in 1917. It needs new windows. It currently has single pane wood windows. What, in your opinion, is the best material to buy replacement windows. Vinyl, wood, or aluminum? Why do you think it is the best? Cost is a consideration also.
Where should we go for replacement windows in Madison, Wi? We are looking to replace our wood double hung windows. We would like to go with vinyl this time because the wood is rotting. Our house is about 14 years old. What is the best window for our money. Is there a company you would recommend? We have had an estimate from Champion and Thebco. About a $4000 price difference.
What is the best window type for replacement windows? I guess what is most important is dependability. Wood, aluminium clad or vinyl clad which has the best durability as far as not becoming defective after a few years. I like the look of all wood and have been priced at $785 per window by Bonneville but is the price justified.
Where can I get replacement woodwork for my windows? I have Anderson Crank windows (they open like a door). All the wood trim is pine, but I would like to go to Oak. I tried making them, but it is too time consuming. Is there a place I can get the exact trim for my windows?
Which replacement window style looks best for my house? I am having the windows in my home replaced. The options I have are all-vinyl (white, beige or brown) or aluminum on the outside, with a choice of paint-grade or stain-grade wood inside. The windows I am replacing are all wood-frame. I'd pretty much settled on the white vinly (easy to coordinate and less expensive) except that much of my interior decor, including the trim around the windows on the main level is stained OAK. I'm wondering if that would look cheesy - the white vinyl window next to the stained oak interior trim. Thoughts? Has anyone tried this or seen this at all? Thanks in advance!
What is the easiest DIY method to repair/replace a window in a house door? I locked myself out of my apartment one day and the doors were locked with my keys inside and me outside, so the only option I had was to break the double paned glass window in the center of my back door. I now need to fix it badly, there is a lot of cold air coming in, & I've read that DIY replacement of windows is the cheapest way (versus hiring someone to fix it). I have no clue where to start, and have never done this before so I was looking for some guidance in getting started on the repair. The door is a metal door with an approximate 3' x 2' window in the center- the window runs from the door knob to near the top of the door and centered across this length. There are wood trimmings along the edges of the window hole that are nailed in somewhere? What would be: - the most cost-efficient way to repair/replace this type of door/window, what all would I need (supply wise), and how do I get started/completing this? Or: Would it be cheaper to find another steel door (possibly through an auction or discount supply) similar/same to the one I have now, and just using that to replace the whole door? Also, any help on locations (on the web) or locally that I can go to find the supplies that I am looking for- (ae: the particular window that I will need, or a used/new door that is similar or the same as mine). I live outside of Pittsburgh, Pa. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks 4 the answers-looking into them :) But I need to clarify that I am a DIY-er, handy woman of sorts & it happens that I have a ton of tools. What I meant was- Out of all the repair options: ex. Using a putty knife 2remove old putty/caulking, remove broken glass, buying putty/caulking, glass/window & paint to repaint the wood trim 2match the door--Which method is cheapest- puttying or some other method? I have read up on repair/replacing windows & the steps listed under most of those r specific to regular household windows-Not a window inserted in a steel door. That's y I came here for help. I pretty much understand the repair- just trying 2find the most cost-effective method of doing this & the best way 2fix it bcuz I rent & I need 2get it fixed b4 the landlord notices & charges me some ridiculous amt to have her handyman repair it.Bsides the major cost diff, another reason I would like 2repair it myself is the landlords office is diagonal from me & handyman will draw attention 2 it
replacement window options? I have a 40 yr old ranch house with single pane, double hung wood windows. The glazing on them is shot, they don't stay up by themselves, and in the winter they are very drafty, even with aluminum 3-track storm windows. Obviously it's time to replace the windows. But because of other exterior problems, I had my house sided last year with new vinyl siding (on top of the old wood siding). I don't want to do anything to damage the new siding. I do not like the look of vinyl windows inside my house, I want wood. On the outside vinyl or aluminum is fine. Also, I'd like to get rid of the ugly aluminum 3-track storms/screen attached to the outside of my windows, so I'll need screens as well as windows. I live the Chicago area, so I need windows that are appropriate for that climate. What are my options to replace these windows, without damaging the siding?
Mold on ceilings of 2 bedrooms in a bungalow.? Basically for the past 2 years the two bedrooms at the end of the house (both have 2 outside walls) have been getting mold on the ceilings (particularly in the corners of the 2 outside walls). Also where there is no circulation of air mold has been forming (under beds/in wardrobes). Now there are 2 theories for this and I wondered if either are to blame? #1 The windows are wood and are pretty poor and in need of replacement. All rooms have these windows but only 2 bedrooms are affected. #2 Sometime ago an extracor fan was fitted in the bathroom to go in to the loft, but not to go outside, could the damp air in the loft be coming back down into the 2 coldest rooms? Please help because I am getting annoyed at my clothes and shoes smelling like mold! Thanks
octagon window pane help!!!? i have an octagon window that is decorative and does not open. it looked like this. http://www.321site.com/greg/photos/octagon-window.jpg the wood window pane part which is not attached to the glass, fell off and shattered in a million pieces. it is just made of wood. it leaned up against the glass. now only the wood part broke. does anyone know where i can get a replacement....either a store or a website. thanks
Old hardwood floors or new "wood" replacement floors? I have a living room that is about 20'x14' with old hardwood flooring. The hardwood needs to be refinished. The urethane is worn off in many places and one spot has darkened due to previous water damage (a long time ago before I owned the house). The trim and windows in the room match the hardwood floor. Should I attempt to refinish the floor or buy that new flooring that you can install that looks like hardwood (not sure what it's called)?

When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous - - yes. The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the table and proceeded to pour the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. "Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - - your family, your partner, your health, your children, your friends, your favorite passions - - things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full." "The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else - - the small stuff." "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. Play another 18. There will always be time for me to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal." "Take care of the golf balls first -- the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand." One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers! Worthy of Heaven A man appears before St. Peter at the pearly gates. The birch says, "Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a beech or a son of a birch?" The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree. He replies, "It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. It is, however, the best piece of ash I have ever put my pecker in." Where This Word Come From Did you know..... In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship and it was also before commercial fertilizer's invention, so large shipments of manure were common. It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could and did happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM! Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined justwhat was happening. After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term "Ship High In Transit" on them which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane. Thus evolved the term "S.H.I.T " , (Ship High In Transport)which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day. You probably did not know the true history of this word. Neither did I. I always thought it was a golf term. !!!!!!! 10 things a man can do at Wal-Mart Here are 10 things a man can do at Wal-Mart while his wife is taking her sweet time: 1. Good double hung sash replacement kits for early windows? My house was built in 1928 and has the original wood double hung, single lite, windows in front. The rear windows are not visible from the street and had the sashes removed and replaced with a kind of insert made from aluminum. Probably done in the 70s or 80s and the orignal window frames these are sitting in still look good. We've been restoring the front original windows and wanted something to match in the back to replaced the aluminum inserts. I originally bought some Anderson Woodwright 400 series replacement window inserts for the rear windows. After installing the first one I instantly didn't like it because you could tell it was an insert. The wood to glass ratio was way off and drastically reduced the visible glass. I sold these to my neighbor who didn't mind that look. So now I'm considering a sash replacement kit like Jeld Wen's Zap Pack sash kits. I like how narrow the jam liners are. I think this might give me a real close to original look so they will match my front windows inside and out. But I haven't seen these in person yet and am still trying to locate a dealer nearby. Who else makes sash kits like these? I'm interested in a good fit and finish with a wood interior and clad exterior. And I'm more interested in the proper look for the house than an airtight fit. I've seen some complaints about this type of kit not being as air tight as some would expect. My house is 80 years old and I'm realistic about what to expect in regards to being air tight. I'm more interested in the benefits of the double pain Low E glass. Any thoughts on this type of kit and who makes them? I see Marvin has a similar kit but the jam liners look much thicker. Thanks
Repairing/replacing old Pella window cranks? On a six unit apartment building, converted from church to apartments about 20+ years ago, the Pella window crank 'male' part has all the teeth worn off. The crank was installed and then the wood window frame was installed around it. I have tried to drill through the crank and insert an an expandable "shim" (may be wrong word). Even with "hard steel" drill bits, it only makes a tiny dent. There are about 55 cranks that need to be repaired or replaced. I have contacted a Pella dealer, but they do not sell just the parts; they have to do the work too. They quoted me $90.00 for a 18" x 48" screen replacement!! I feel that there should be a way to replace just the male part and then put a standard handle on it. I'm a dyi landlady and have not won the lottery to pay that kind of money. There are about 55 cranks that need to be repaired or replaced. I have contacted a Pella dealer, but they do not sell just the parts; they have to do the work too. They quoted me $90.00 for a 18" x 48" screen replacement. (That's was $39 for the screen and $50.00 for shipping).Pella does not sell the screen frame for dyi and they have a different screen/frame connection.
Replacement Windows - Nothing fancy, just dependable.? I have 14 double hung windows that need to be replaced. All are twin (meaning 2 windows side by side). They are wood single pane. The sills need replacing too. When buying replacement windows, are the whole window and frame (and sill) replaced? I'm looking for vinyl replacements, low e, low solar gain, double pane. I had one estimate of $8200! Dang. That was a lot more than I expected. I've priced the ones at Home Depot and for my size he quoted me a price of $200 each (Not including installation). This whole window replacement thing is really confusing. Thanks for any and all help!

Will adding storm windows help reduce interstate traffic noise? We live about 1/2 mile through a wooded area from an interstate highway. The traffic noise is driving me crazy! We recently replaced our 20-year-old single-paned double-hung wooden windows with double-paned, argon-filled, low-e, vinyl replacement windows. That helped some, but not enough. I've been reading up some more about sound control and it seems like we need to either get storm windows with as much of a gap in between or completely start over with laminate windows (which would be very expensive - ouch $$$). It's really only in the master bedroom that it really is a problem because that room is closest to the interstate and is the only one where one lays in bed at night listening to the big trucks roll by, while you try to fall to sleep. I would like to find a laminate storm window to mount on the outside.. I think these might exist in coastal areas, but we live inland and I'm not finding any. Any ideas? Thanks!!!! There are already lots of plants between me and the noise but they slope down and away from my house. I do not want to block the view from my windows as it is a pretty view of the woods that I would like to keep. So, any thing that is used would have to be transparent and in keeping with a normal brick and wood home. Thanks!
Do I need building permits to replace my windows? I live in a tract home made in the late 40's early 50's. all of the windows are single pane the wood framings are rotted and they are in need of replacement. Some of the windows are made from floor to ceiling in which case I might have to stucko the remainder of the outside walls when I replace the big ones with the regular sized windows. I am told by friends and some contractors that I don't need a permit to replace the windows since I am not doing any major renovations that effects the floor plan or square footage of my home. Is this true? By the wayI live in Orange County , California.
I want to replace my homes windows? I want to replace my homes windows, would it be cheaper to do it my self? I want to replace the complete windows not replacement windows, I have vinyl siding on my house would this interfere with installation? how would i go about measuring and ordering new windows? the reason I want to replace the complete windows I want to make sure there is proper insulation around them and my sills are wood and rotting and cracking.
Where can I get free home repairs caused by hurricane Wilma? I've looked into the state & federal programs-there's nothing I qualify for or that is available. Looking for someone who can donate time to do or help do repairs. Even someone who has knowledge of how things should be done, would be helpful. (Most of repairs not incredibly difficult, but do require someone who has done this stuff before) I need some stucco repaired, drywall in one room, some damaged wood replaced, some holes dug for replacement fence posts and some assistance repairing the fence. Also need to replace some window cranks for according windows. And need some plywood cut to cover windows in case of future hurricane. (I have plywood-I'm just not able to cut it) I could probably pay something, but not allot. I have misc items that could be used for trade: golf clubs & bag , bowling balls, several clothes dryers that need minor repairs, misc garage stuff. IN MIAMI - NEAR NE 163RD STREET MALL
Cost to reglaze/restore windows? We have several single-hung windows with multiple panes (mostly six over six) - wood trim and sash in aluminum frame. The glazing is essentially toast- peeling and cracking and for the most part missing thanks to many years of inhabitants neglecting to use storms or repaint. Some of the reglazing I can probably do myself, but several windows I've not been able to remove and others are above ground level. Has anyone even the roughest idea what a reglazing project (possibly repainting, the odd pane replacement or even complete pane replacement, other a la carte items) cost range is these days? Might it still be cheaper to have a glazier remove, reglaze and remount these windows than to replace them with the basic energystar vinyl windows and have done with it? Eventually we'll be able to have a glazier out for an estimate, but it would be good to have a very rough idea before starting to figure out priorities on projects! Thanks.
Which home improvements should i do to my house? We have an old 2 family house that needs alot of work. Our plan is to fix it up and then sell it when the market goes back up. I know alot of people say not to do huge expensive projects before sellijng because you most likely won't get all your money back. So I was wondering if, from the list below, someone could tell me which I should do and which I shouldn't: -insulation -Replacement windows (old, rotten wood windows there now) -Gas heating system (only gas on gas stove as heating source now) -Paint outside house (asbestos shingles now) -Gut out the bathroom and put new shower walls, tub and sink (mold now) -Remodel small kitchen area (counters and sink are extemely low, and counter rotting around edges, and mold now)
What heater type and manufacturer you recommend? I need to know what type and the manufacturer of a furnace or heater you recommend for my house. I have a house that is 3040 square feet. It was built in 1946. The insulation in it is not the best right now, but it is insulated. I have new replacement windows in here also. 1520 square feet upstairs, and 1520 downstairs. The downstairs is a basement, but not totally buried. I will only minutely heat the basement for now. i do have natural gas available here. Propane can be trucked in, but I have to have one of those tanks on my land:(. Currently I have a 60 year old heating oil furnace. it worked right up until lastnight. It costs me $400 to $500 a month to run it, so I need to do some upgrading, and I need to do it fast. its not out of fuel I live in North carolina right in the middle of the state, so climate wise, it gets around 0 on the coldest days. I do also want air conditioning with it. Let me know what you think. No wood stoves, I have one in my shop, and hate it

What is the easiest method to repair/replace window in a house door?
