when installing large replacement window, the new replacement must be smaller than the opening. by how much?

I have 97" W X 50 1/4" H opening to put replacement into. Smaller by how much on each side?

  1. Just small enough to fit as closely as possible. If you are using trim that can make a difference but as exactly as possible the same size as the hole.
  2. This is a case of terminology. Is your opening the rough (actual opening size) or the nominal window size? Different windows (pella, marvin, etc.) will have different requirements for the same size "window." Once you pick a window brand you like just look at their website and it will tell you the rough opening sizes needed.
  3. we just replaced all of our windows and the manufacturer told us a half inch smaller width and a half inch smaller height.this worked well for us.
