  1. If in the UK you can't......it has to be certified now.....bit more Nanny state.

  2. Home Depot and Lowes have "Do-it-Yourself" classes and instructors on site all the time...

When I have to have something done, I go by there and they can teach me.

Also if you have a contractor friend, call him for some help. You may owe him one, but it's worth it to have good windows.

  3. It's fairly easy to do....just did a few windows for a customer. As a previous poster said, Lowe's or Home Depot have classes for free that show how to do it and DIYnet.com has tutorial videos of how also. http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/pac_ctnt/text/0,2019,DIY_14161_25028,00.html It basically involves measuring the old windows between the side panels of the frame and top to bottom...buy a window or have one made that is very close or exactly the same dimensions...carefully remove the trim moldings with a putty knife and prybar...remove the old windows and parting strips...install the new window...shim if necessary and make sure it's level before attaching it with screws into the sides...replace the trim and caulk the exterior edges. If you cannot find an exact or close match window, you may have to do some modification to the window opening and adjust or cut any trim as necessary. Also, add insulation as needed between the new window and side/top of framing.
