Window Sill Replacement
Sometimes it may happen that our window is still in good condition, but the
window sill is having problems such as rotting due to weather. A damaged window
sill can totally ruin the good looks of your window replacement. It is therefore
necessary to consider repairing the window sill as soon as possible. You can
hire a technician to replace the sill or just follow the steps below for
carrying out the job of window sill replacement.
Before window sill replacement, ensure that you are equipped with measuring
tape, wood putty, hammers, pry bars and saber saws.
1. To start with, you will need to calculate the general dimensions
such as the width, length and thickness of the window sill.
2. Next you will need to take out the trim of the sash channel and the
side parts of the casing trim so that you can reach the sill. Then remove any
left over trim using a pry bar. Place the pry bar on a piece of scrap lumber to
save it from hurting other trim or walls.
3. Remove the remaining nails in the walls or the window jamb. If
there are any nails left in the trim, use pliers to pick them from behind the
trim.
4. Now take out the window sill without further spoiling it. You can
keep the old s
ill as a reference for window sill replacement.
5. The next thing to do is visit your nearest lumberyard or home
improvement store and buy replacement lumber. You will also need some finish
nails.
6. You can measure the old sill and draw the same on the new lumber or
to make it easy, simply copy the dimensions of the old sill on the new one by
tracing it.
7. Employ a saber saw for cutting the new sill. A sharp toothed blade
is good for making smooth cuts. Later on you can do sanding on the open end
grain cuts.
8. Now you can lay the new sill in its position with about 2-3 nails
for support. Also remember to fit in the trim that you took out earlier with the
help of nails. If you think the sill is done well, nail down the rest of the
pieces properly.
9. Finally, cover all the nail holes with wood putty. Use a matching
paint that goes well with your interiors and you are done!
